The Grainfield Rural High School was organized in 1916. The first high school classes were held in the “Opera House”. The first instructors were Mr. L. E. Willoughby, principal, Miss Georgia Baldwin and Miss Evelyn Powder.
At the end of the third year the high school was moved to the new high school building, where the first graduating class of 1920, with nine students graduated under Mr. A. M. Brown as principal.
Four hundred thirty students graduated from this High School within the next half century.
The spring of 1917 brought a tornado, which destroyed one wall of the uncompleted high school. In 1951 a “Shop” was added. In 1968 the last class of nineteen students graduated under Mr. R. L. Arnold as principal.
The Grainfield, Gove and Park High Schools were unified and moved to the New Wheatland High School located south of Grainfield.
These class pictures are temporary posts until I am able to get to Grainfield with a set of lamps to illuminate the picture cards so that I can turn off my flash and with curtains to cover the windows to block the outside light from reflecting in the pictures.
Herby Queen's assistance in taking these senior class pictures is greatly appreciated. He has been the "Go To Person" whenever I have needed something in Grainfield.
